Chapter 30

Garard

Well past midnight, I slipped away from the Roark/Kelt wedding celebration, bringing Talmadge with me as I collected snacks and glasses. My Lord had already departed to his favorite room, the Green Salon, with his close friend Dr. Georg Gammell, Chemistry Chair from the University. Jill and her ladies had retired to their quarters and most of the guests had either left for home or gone to their assigned rooms in the palace. A few last partiers still helped themselves to My Lord’s lavish buffets and plentiful wine, but I trusted Roml and his men to shut down the party without letting violence erupt.

When we entered, My Lord was lounging in a recliner, his feet in the air, his eyes closed. Dr. Gammell had relaxed in a chair near the fireplace, used to palace parties and their aftermath having attended them since his university days with the royal heir. He’d already packed his pipe with his favorite tobacco which filled the air with its sweet aroma.

Professor Talmadge entered hesitantly and continued to fidget from his sudden rise to the palatial level of society. I’d watched him during the wedding dinner and thought he’d handled himself well for someone so out of his element. Still a long way from comfortable, even though My Lord treated him as if he’d known him forever, he settled for a chair in the corner, out of My Lord’s line of sight.

I could not relax. As majordomo, I held the responsibility for the smooth running of state events and a royal wedding qualified. Glad to have that headache past us, I felt it necessary to settle Soer Jaym’s future before My Lord succumbed to his heavy intake of food and drink.

“Thank the Lord that wedding is over!” My Lord spoke before I could, not opening his eyes. “I never want to go through something like that again, even if I do have more daughters to marry off.” Surprisingly, he brought up the subject I wanted to address. “What has happened to Jaym?” Then, “Sit down, Garard. Relax. You’ve pulled it off.”

“Thank you, My Lord.” I took the chair next to him, clasped my hands together and rested my elbows on my knees, pretending to be at ease. “She went straight to her room when we reached the palace. Cari is full of tears and apologies, but she’ll at least keep Soer Jaym company. I suggest you make some decisions tonight about her future.”

My Lord grimaced. “I agree. I’ll not have her hurt by my wife’s nastiness.”

“All the ladies are aware of what happened and why Roark married Kelt instead. Knowing the servants, the story is all over the city by now.”

He stretched back in his chair and spoke to the ceiling. “Nothing we can do about that. We’ll put out an official statement in the morning.”

The professor spoke from the shadows, sounding tired but fascinated. “Will you tell the networks about the don and reeth?” He shifted uncomfortably in his seat and stifled a belch.
